The story in brief

A retired taxi driver turned his life around after witnessing a road accident and became Delhi's Man of the Golden Hour, rescuing dozens of people by racing victims to hospitals at breakneck speed.

Today's tale is of Suraj Prakash Vaid, a former taxi driver from Delhi, who made it his mission to save countless lives after facing the road fatalities.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Suraj Prakash Vaid's life is a movie. He was born to partition refugee parents, dropped out of school in ninth grade, and became a taxi driver to make a living. But his life changed for good with one incident, watching a woman lying hurt on Vikas Marg in 1986.

Since then, he has rescued at least 92, maybe more, over 200 victims in one report — individuals during that critical "Golden Hour" after an accident.

The Heart of a Hero

Equipped with a scooter, first-aid kit, and indomitable will, he zooms through Delhi traffic, sometimes loading the victims into rickshaws or taxis himself, to deliver them to emergency rooms in time.

His cell phone number, displayed on his vehicle, is shared among police, ambulance services, and taxi unions across Delhi. Vaid ensures police are contacted, reports are filed, valuables are protected, and even appears in court when needed.

Recognition That Matters

Vaid's selfless service has been valued on numerous fronts:

  • National Road Safety Awards — recognition at the highest level.
  • Delhi Police Awards and financial rewards for his service.
  • The inaugural Cheistha Kochhar Good Samaritan Award 2024 — presented by Lt. Gen. S.P. Kochhar — for his life-saving service spanning decades.

A Ripple of Compassion

I have saved 92 people so far… have filed accident reports with the police… have testified in court as a witness and safeguarded victims' property.

He has spent many nights at hospital clerk's desks, comforted families of victims, and pushed through even as legal protections for Good Samaritans were ambiguous, but now formally codified by the Supreme Court.

Your move

Step Up as a Golden Hour Guardian

In times of crisis, we all have a choice: to turn away or to step forward. Suraj Prakash Vaid, a humble taxi driver, chose the latter — racing the clock in India's Golden Hour and rescuing more than 100 lives while first responders hesitated.

  • Learn basic first aid
  • Be ready to help in emergencies
  • Never be just a witness again

Be a golden hour hero to someone — because when we act, we give others a chance to live.
