About NextMile

An idea-thon built like a policy lab.

NextMile invites teams from across India to propose evidence-based solutions to the country’s most pressing road safety problems. Concepts are reviewed by senior policymakers, road safety researchers and civil society leaders — and the strongest ideas are mentored toward real implementation.

The goal isn’t another report. It’s a pipeline of workable policy that government and industry can actually pilot.

Top 3 Finalists

The ideas selected to shape policy this year

Chosen by a panel of senior policymakers, researchers and road safety practitioners.

  1. 01

Winner · Regulating E-commerce & Delivery Rider Safety

    Strategists

India's first gig-economy road safety framework — combining commercial two-wheeler permits, a cross-platform Rider Safety API, a cess-funded Rider Safety Fund, rest pods and a public dashboard. Pilot-ready for Bengaluru and Gurugram.

  2. 02

    Runner-up · Crash Compensation & Insurance Reform

    Safer Miles Initiative

SurakshaSetu — a blockchain-backed platform that pairs IoT and GPS crash data with insurer records to automate verified compensation payouts within 72 hours.

  3. 03

Third place · Regulating E-commerce & Delivery Rider Safety

The SafeMile Protocol — a phased national plan with rider training and registry, fair delivery timelines, safety scores, welfare cover and a transparency dashboard, funded by small per-order fees.

Problem Statement Tracks

Eight problems. One year to crack them.

Teams pick a track and design a policy that can be piloted in an Indian city.

01

Speed Management in Urban Areas

Over-speeding is the top cause of road deaths.

02

Regulating E-commerce & Delivery Rider Safety

Gig economy riders face time pressure and poor safety norms.

03

School Zone Safety Norms

Children remain high-risk vulnerable road users.

04

Local Black Spot Identification Framework

Black spots often go unidentified at the ward/block level.

05

Alcohol & Drug Driving Prevention

High correlation with fatalities, especially at night.

06

Road Safety Data Transparency

Absence of granular crash data limits good policy.

07

On-Road Emergency Response Protocols

Victims often receive no assistance in the golden hour.
